ROYAL OAK TOWNSHIP
We're Up And Coming!

Today
Royal Oak Township is a charter township with a population of 2,374. It embodies the country's social history, marked by the challenges and successes of African Americans throughout history. Families established themselves here before Detroit's expansion, symbolizing a positive "leapfrog" migration from the inner city to areas beyond the typical growth zone. Today, it remains a notable African-American residential community with a deep historical significance.

History
Royal Oak Township was established in 1833 as a 36-square-mile civil township. At one time, it included all or parts of several modern cities, including Hazel Park, Ferndale, Oak Park, Madison Heights, Pleasant Ridge, Huntington Woods, Royal Oak, Berkley, and Clawson.
The area's economy changed over time. In the 1800s and early 1900s, it was based on agriculture. However, with the growth of the transportation industry, the economy shifted. The township’s economy experienced significant fluctuations during and after World Wars I and II, pivotal moments in its history. The citizens actively participated in war production but endured hardship during those challenging times.

Between 1921 and 1950, the township’s size decreased as cities broke off and became incorporated. What remains today of the Charter Township of Royal Oak is only 0.5 square miles.
